Wildflowers are some of the easiest plants to grow from
seeds. Wildflowers are hardy, require little maintenance, and come in many,
many beautiful varieties. Planting wildflowers can be done in the spring or
the fall, and in many climates they can be planted during the summer as
well. Wildflowers grow in almost every climate all over the world. They are
planted by nature all year round, making it easy to get them growing even if
the environment is less than hospitable to other plants. Wildflowers need no
fertilizers, no potting soils and no mulch to get them to germinate.
Wildflower seeds are so hardy they can be planted in the colder part of the
early spring, through the rainy season, during the summer, and into the fall.
Wildflowers
are not only famous because of their vibrant colors and the many varieties
you can find available, but also for how easy it is for them in the
germination and growth process. Wildflowers can grow in any environment
imaginable, and you don't need much work to grow it. Most wildflower seeds
don't need mulching or fertilizers to grow. In the open wildflower seeds are
released all year long, making it possible for wildflower lovers to plant
them in their garden any time of the year. In most climates, wildflowers
grow rapidly when planted from the beginning of Spring season until the end
of Fall season.
For gardeners planting wildflower seeds in the spring,
the soil may need to be tilled before the seeds are planted. Tilling the
soil can also make the soil more hospitable for weeds, however. Although
many gardeners believe that wildflowers will rid a garden of weeds, it is
not the case. If the area to be planted has a lot of weed seeds in it, the
wildflower seeds may reduce the amount of weeds as they both compete for the
soil, but in general they will not choke out weeds. To give wildflower seeds
a better chance of survival, young weeds should be pulled before they have a
chance to compete with the wildflowers. If this is done early enough, the
wildflowers will have a chance to get large and healthy before the weeds
again encroach on their soil.
Since most of the planting work is done during
spring season, the most important thing to do is to loosen the soil first
before planting the seeds. The process of tilling will make the land loosen
and provide the perfect condition for the wildflower seeds to grow. But
gardeners must realize that this would make the condition suitable for weeds
to grow also. Planting will not stop all the unwanted plants from growing,
but it might reduce the quantity as it fights with the other plants for the
sunlight and nutrients from the soil. If you find out that there are a
number of these unwanted plants growing beside your flowers, they should be
pulled out before it does harm to your wildflowers. In the near future the
weeds may come back, but by then the wildflowers should have grown already
and can survive from the weeds.
You can find various types of wildflowers, some more suitable for
cold weather, while some are more suited for hot places. Wildflowers can be
divided into two types, the
annual
flower seeds and perennial wildflowers. Perennial
wildflowers are expected to last longer without replanting, which is about a
few years, therefore they are a good choice if a low maintenance garden is
your type of a garden. Perennial wildflowers have a higher rate of survival
if planted during spring time, even though theoretically it can be grown
anytime of the year. When planted in spring, the plant would have grown up
by the time winter comes, giving them a good chance of surviving the winter
cold. Annual wildflower plants can also be grown anytime of the year, but it
grows best when planted during spring and fall season. For annual wildflower
plants planted during fall season, they will go inactive during the cold
season, therefore enabling them to get used to unfamiliar surroundings so
they can germinate before spring season arrives.
The
different types of wildflowers can be differentiated by the continent and
weather that they grow in. And as mentioned above, they can be categorized
into
perennial
flower seeds and annual types; therefore gardeners would have an easier
time deciding which one to plant. As mentioned, the best time to plant
perennial type wildflowers is during spring season, when it is the perfect
condition for the plants to take root. Once the wildflower starts to take
root during spring time, then it would have all the time in the world to
grow before toughing it out when the cold of winter comes. This would enable
the plants to live for few more years, saving the effort to replant them
every year once they die out. As for annual wildflower seeds, they are best
planted during spring or fall season for them to have the optimal growing
condition and weather. Growing them during fall season would mean they will
have all winter to start the germination process and going inactive before
the inviting warm weather and rain of Spring comes to help them grow even faster.
Wildflower seeds, because of their beauty and
hardiness, are popular for much more than just flower gardens. Wildflower
seeds can be planted to ward off soil erosion, and can populate meadows with
thousands of beautiful, low-maintenance flowers. Most states now use
wildflowers to curb erosion and to provide attractive landscaping for
highways and public areas. Wildflowers, literally being flowers that grow
easily in the wild, can also be grown from cheap seeds. The seeds are less
specialized, making them less expensive than the highly-specialized flower
seed varieties that have been bred and cultivated to give a very narrow
range of results in regards to color, size, and shape. These results in a
wide range of possibilities from wildflower seeds, making them an
interesting, low-maintenance addition to any flower garden.
While wild flower seeds remain popular for flower
gardens because of their hardiness and delicate beauty, wildflowers are
useful plants in many other regards. Soil erosion is a real problem in some
areas, and wildflowers have been found to be a good remedy. There are many
states now that plant wildflower seeds to keep soil in place as well as to
add attractive flowers to roadsides and other areas with the least possible
labor and cost. Because wildflower seeds are just that- flower seeds that
have come from the wild, the resulting plant is a less specialized variety,
making it less expensive. Most commercial flower seed today comes from
plants that have been bred to give solid, consistent results that will be
the same from seed to seed. But these cheap seeds have much more variety in
them, giving gardeners a wider range of colors and shapes than from more
specialized flowers.
